2018 Tech Breakthroughs Made Available to The Public

Every year it seems that technology advances and breakthroughs happen faster and faster.  What was once science fiction is becoming the new reality at a staggering pace.   In 2018, we will continue to see new technology tools, improvements and breakthroughs developed, tested and released to the public.  Here are a few examples of new technology advances that are slated to be available to the public in 2018.

Hyperloop:  Elon Musk always has something new up his sleeve.  It has been a long time coming, but the official Hyperloop track in Quay Valley, CA is set to open to the public in 2018.  A car drive from San Francisco to Manhattan is about 50 hours non-stop, the HyperLoop would make that trip in 4 hours and 18 minutes.

Artificial Intelligence in Phones: Most cell phones in 2018 will be created with AI chips built in. These chips will help phones recognize voice, predict a user’s needs, and be able to process massive amounts of data in short periods of time.  In layman’s terms, your phone will know your favorite show and can find it fast… even if it’s also saving a slew of photos from your girl’s trip to the Catskills.

Intelligent in-House Speakers: Amazon will continue to expand their voice-activated Alexa speaker’s capabilities in 2018.  With an increase in intelligent items that can connect with Alexa, this advancing technology is streamlining everyday tasks like ordering groceries, choosing outfits, scheduling appointments and more.  As part of the internet of things (IoT), remember to be security and privacy aware.  And with IoT, you may never have to leave the house…but please do, sunlight is good for you.

Internet speed to blow your mind: Huawei company in South Korea has spent 2017 working on 10GBS (gigabytes per second) speed internet and has made the prediction that in 2018, it will become a viable option for consumers. For context, Google’s Fiber has its fastest download speeds at 1000mbps (megabytes per second). The average internet plan is around 30-50mbps. Get ready to stream 50 videos in 4K…just…because…you can.

More Self Driving: The competition is heating up!  In 2018 Ford will begin testing its own line of autonomous vehicles.  Tesla may have started the trend, but with GM and Ford now jumping on the self-driving band wagon, we will probably see an arms race at which manufacturer can get the best car out to the public the fastest.  If you trust your car to drive, you may soon be able to enjoy your morning commute on your phone sipping your favorite coffee.

Augmented Reality (AR): Remember the PokémonGo craze?  And the boom of augmented reality talks?  Well, in 2018, companies like ARKit are expected to create a new platform for AR.  With a projected market of 3 billion dollars, this is a lucrative area for gaming companies with projected implementations in business marketing and AI/AR interactions in stores.  For now, consumers can plan to enjoy the amazing interactive games that come from it.  Here’s a video showing some of their work.

You may not be ready for AR or a self-driving car yet, but 2018 is poised to be one of the biggest tech innovation years we’ve seen yet.   It will be interesting to see what else is unveiled in the coming year.
